Description
Methylcobalamin is one of two physiologically active coenzyme forms of vitamin B12, distinguished by a methyl group covalently bonded to the central cobalt atom of the corrin ring. In vitro and rodent-model research literature has characterized its interaction with methionine synthase enzyme activity in the cytosolic methionine-cycle / one-carbon-metabolism pathway and downstream S-adenosylmethionine generation (Banerjee & Matthews, FASEB J., 1990). Rodent-model neural-tissue investigations have examined its association with myelin-pathway homocysteine remethylation flux and methyl-group-transfer signaling cascades (Scalabrino, Prog. Neurobiol., 2009). Findings in in vitro / animal studies do not necessarily translate to other systems.
