Description
Glutathione (GSH) is the principal intracellular non-protein thiol antioxidant tripeptide, distinguished by an isopeptide γ-glutamyl bond that confers resistance to standard aminopeptidase activity. In vitro and rodent-model research literature has characterized its interaction with glutathione peroxidase, glutathione reductase, and glutathione S-transferase enzyme classes and downstream redox-buffering and xenobiotic-conjugation pathways (Meister & Anderson, Annu. Rev. Biochem., 1983). Rodent-model tissue investigations have examined its association with cellular GSH/GSSG ratio dynamics and Nrf2-pathway antioxidant-response signaling cascades (Lu, Mol. Aspects Med., 2009). Findings in in vitro / animal studies do not necessarily translate to other systems.
