Description
AICAR (acadesine) is a cell-permeable adenosine analog that is intracellularly phosphorylated to ZMP, an AMP mimetic that allosterically activates AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK). In vitro and rodent-model research literature has characterized its interaction with the AMPK α/β/γ heterotrimer and downstream phosphorylation of ACC, mTORC1-pathway, and PGC-1α-pathway substrates (Corton et al., Eur. J. Biochem., 1995). Murine skeletal-muscle investigations have examined its association with mitochondrial biogenesis signaling pathways and GLUT4 trafficking cascades (Narkar et al., Cell, 2008). Findings in in vitro / animal studies do not necessarily translate to other systems.
AICAR (5-Aminoimidazole-4-carboxamide ribonucleotide) is an AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK) activator.
