Description
Elamipretide (SS-31) is a synthetic mitochondria-targeted aromatic-cationic tetrapeptide of the Szeto-Schiller class, designed to selectively partition into the inner mitochondrial membrane through electrostatic and hydrophobic interaction with cardiolipin. In vitro and rodent-model research literature has characterized its interaction with cardiolipin in the inner mitochondrial membrane and downstream effects on cytochrome c oxidase activity and electron-transport-chain efficiency (Birk et al., J. Am. Soc. Nephrol., 2013). Rodent-model investigations have examined its association with mitochondrial membrane-potential signaling pathways and reactive oxygen species mitochondrial-flux dynamics (Szeto, AAPS J., 2006). Findings in in vitro / animal studies do not necessarily translate to other systems.
