Description
Human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG) is a heterodimeric glycoprotein hormone composed of an α-subunit shared with LH/FSH/TSH and a hormone-specific β-subunit, structurally and functionally homologous to luteinizing hormone (LH). In vitro and rodent-model research literature has characterized its interaction with the LH/CG receptor (LHCGR) on gonadal tissue and downstream cAMP/PKA and PKC signaling pathway activation (Ascoli et al., Endocr. Rev., 2002). Rodent-model gonadal-tissue investigations have examined its association with steroidogenic-pathway gene-expression cascades and StAR-protein signaling pathway flux (Manna et al., Mol. Endocrinol., 2002). Findings in in vitro / animal studies do not necessarily translate to other systems.
