Description
LL-37 is the mature 37-amino-acid C-terminal fragment of human cathelicidin antimicrobial protein hCAP-18, generated by proteinase 3-mediated cleavage and adopting an α-helical amphipathic conformation upon membrane binding. In vitro research literature has characterized its interaction with bacterial lipopolysaccharide and anionic membrane phospholipids and downstream membrane-permeabilization signaling pathways (Dürr et al., Biochim. Biophys. Acta, 2006). In vitro and murine-model investigations have examined its association with FPR2 receptor signaling pathways and host-defense cytokine cascades (Yang et al., J. Exp. Med., 2000). Findings in in vitro / animal studies do not necessarily translate to other systems.
LL-37 is the only human cathelicidin antimicrobial peptide consisting of 37 amino acid residues.
