Human menopausal gonadotropin (HMG, menotropin) is a urinary-derived gonadotropin preparation containing approximately equal FSH and LH bioactivities, both as heterodimeric glycoprotein hormones sharing a common α-subunit and distinct β-subunits. In vitro and rodent-model research literature has characterized its interaction with the FSH receptor (FSHR) and LH/CG receptor (LHCGR) on gonadal tissue and downstream cAMP/PKA signaling pathway activation in granulosa, theca, and Leydig cell preparations (Ulloa-Aguirre et al., Mol. Cell. Endocrinol., 2007). Rodent-model gonadal-tissue investigations have examined its association with steroidogenic and folliculogenic-pathway gene-expression cascades (Richards & Pangas, J. Clin. Invest., 2010). Findings in in vitro / animal studies do not necessarily translate to other systems.
